Dug a couple years ago... have trimmed once or twice. Started to take shape so figured I make a thread. I'm really liking forsythia. There is a definitive methodology and timing to working them to ramify, they are reallly tough and hardy, they bulk up nicely, can take heavy root work easily, and you get a nice show of color early in the winter when most trees are just waking up.

Cleaned up the soil a bit tonight, clipped long shoots back, rewired new apex, and marked for repot next year. Will let grow unrestrained after cutting back the initial spring buds.

Need to make a 10"x10" grow box for it this winter. Probably 6" deep for recovery and pumping up for a couple years.

I guess it depends your goals. For thickening, I would leave a long sacrifice while maintaining the internode distance per the above referenced pruning guidelines. Havent been working with species for too long so I dont have much advice.

I did four or five cuttings last spring that all but one took. Several still have leaves on them as of today.
Hopefully they will make it.

I Must be missing something.
Which guidelines do you refer to?
Woops! Thought it was posted in this thread:

I did one cutting last year which took nicely.

I expect these would air layer and root almost every time. They easily ground layer naturally.
