I bought a forsythia that has a hollow in the trunk with dead wood. It’s clear that no one has taken care of this hollow for a long time. Any ideas on what’s best to do with it? Should I treat it with a solution for gin or remove the dead wood and let the wound heal?

Clean it out, remove all the soft parts and let the rest up to nature or if you prefer treat it with something to preserve the deadwood after removing the soft bits.

Forsythia has a hollow inside branch/trunk from nature wood can be pretty hard but will deteriorate over time.
When making big cuts moisture will go I the natural hollow and rot from inside out.
I got a massive one and the trunk is also hollow because of the same thing.

Wouldn’t bother treating it with anything. The wood on forsythia is extremely soft and treating it won’t add much. Clean the hollow out as much as possible keep the tree growing to help close the wound
