Five Year Native Tree Challenge: RJG2's Ulmus rubra (slippery elm)

This is a really cool elm project. I love the material. Its Bonkers!!!!

I like the idea of a naturalesque pot for this. I also think something completely contrasting would be cool also, something with very sharp flat angular contours.

In my best Dr. Frankenstein voice: "The Stump Clump Elm lives!!! Mwahahah!!"

So much texture in it. I’d think a subtle matte glazed oval or rectangle would enhance the tree and all the detail it has. But looks like you have time to consider your options still.

I do like the look of the pot in the "inspiration" post (#2). We'll see!

Is it too late to do another cut back on elms? I have 2.5 months to the average first frost.

What a great funky tree you’ve got going here!

I would think that’s plenty of time. You probably won’t get the kind of response you got mid summer, but I bet you get a new push. If nothing does push, based on how this thing was treated before being dug, I can assure you it won’t die. 😉

Could be a great opportunity to see how many cut backs and flushes you can get on it.

🤣

Just wanted to make sure things have time to harden off. I keep seeing people do their last trimming in July in milder climates (not necessarily elm).

Oddly this is my first elm, and was the only one until I took a small air layer off one of the other slippery elms in my yard.

I'm beginning to think they don't like rooting hormone - I'm 1 for 3 on air layers and like 10 for 100 on cuttings (and 9 of those were killed by squirrels or chipmunks).

I'll have to try without next time.
