Fisher's Elms

Another winged elm. I'm trying to develop a broom. It was ground layered last year and separated this spring. Will be curious how the nebari is developing under there. Will see next spring.

This Chinese elm threw a shoot from the base which allowed me to revisit the twin trunk idea. I started to do this a couple years ago and then abandoned the idea when I included this tree in that penjing thing I tried. Looks like it just wants to be a twin trunk I guess.

And last is my little Hokkaido. Nobody picked this one out of the 3, but I liked it the best. The others have been moved along. Not sure if I will keep this tree long term but I like it pretty well right now. At least it doesn't take up much room.

I haven't updated my elm thread for a while - so here goes. Unfortunately, I lost my nice water elm over the winter due to a bonehead mistake. It was one of my best trees and I'll miss it. I did get to put it in the club show last fall at least, and I made cuttings from it that I made this forest from. So not a total loss, but it still hurt.

Cedar Elm that I got from Zach. Getting ready to do a thread graft on this one. The branch is ready, I just need to drill and thread it through. That will close up the hole on the left when it develops.

Cedar elms heal better than almost everything, so your thread graft should do fine. Nice tree ;)

Got some good advice from @JudyB about the planting angle of this tree. I was able to slip pot without messing with the roots and tilt just slightly to the left. This tree was not repotted this spring so the root ball was nice and firm. This operation could certainly have waited until next year but I don't think the tree will skip a beat. I'll do a proper repot next year.

Anyway, I think the new angle is much better. The crown of the big tree looks more in balance. Now just need to let the little one run and gain some girth. Thanks for the suggestion Judy. Amazing what a different set of eyes will see.

I have always found your statement about a different pair of eyes to be soooo true. That is why I welcome all critique on my trees, even from non bonsai folk. They may have a feeling for something that can change your perspective. It looks good. I'm sure it won't even notice you did it!

Thread graft complete on my cedar elm and new buds starting to swell. I was worried I damaged them threading it through, but all seems well.

From the back side.

And the whole tree trimmed up a bit since the last photo that shows where the branch will be.

Great thread for inspiration on some different directions one can go with elms!
Do you still have the 3 'hokkaido' elms? Your 5-trunk clump-style one is actually pretty similar to a hokkaido that I just picked up this year.

I don't. I moved 2 of them on last year and killed the 3rd over the winter somehow.
