Fish Stories

@Steve C I got out yesterday....
Looking for Northerns on the Des Plaines while the fam went bowling!

Met a dude who got one a couple days ago!

It's on!

All I caught was a fatty curved Red Maple trunk!

Ha!

I'm startin' to get cabin fever BAD lately, I need to get out soon. It wasn't bad most the winter, but the past couple weeks now that the weather is starting be a bit nicer and the rod orders are starting to get into spring rush season my cabin fever has been going into overload! Probably doesn't help I have been watching 8hrs of fishing DVD's every day lately while I build rods lol :)

I feel you....ever since that 60F weekend a couple back, (spent fishing!) I been going absolutely mad!

I'm out cleaning the yard today and setting up 3 New rain barrels.
Turning the compost piles and pulling weeds...

Pulling every bit of plastic out of everywhere from the God Damn squirrels nest..

Saw a hawk, which I wished for BTW, a couple blocks down....
So bye bye Bitch Ass squirrels!

Amurs are breaking leaf edges...
So I know spring is official here.

That new tank is wicked man!

I found a cheap canister filter the other day! Did I tell you that yet?

Ahhhhaaaaaa!

Cool, canisters are for sure my choice in filters. They do a great job and usually you only have to do filter maintenance 2-3 times per year depending on your stocking load.

I've been thinking about getting a rain barrel myself for collecting water for my trees. Just saw a guy a few streets over that has a trailer full of plastic 55g barrels for $20 a pop. Might snag one of them from him for this summer.

Craigslist, municipalities, neighbors....

Free all day!

I got mine with spigots and overflows, gutter extensions and screens...

Free from my fishing buddy one town over.

While you guys are planning on fishing in boats, we've had/are having a major blizzard with wild winds blowing all of the snow from north of the Arctic Circle into southern Canada and the Northern States.

BUT, while you guys are worrying about an early bud-break, I know that I could go on a 4 week holiday and it would be highly unlikely that the snow would even be gone by the time I get back. :)

Lol!

In your bathtub!?

-1 low Friday for you!
I still got Mio on my weather list!

Well you know.
But actually where the river dumps into the first backwater is clear of ice.

Missed 2....

Then first one I saw...

I was shaking a tangle out of my rattletrap about 8 inches above the water, and the SOB jumped out for it!

They were mad today!

There is a man-made pond/reservoir near here that ALL of the jackfish/pike are golden-green (mostly gold)... I have never seen that before, but the soil where the pond is dug is a light gold-ish colour when it is wet; I have to assume that this is some sort of adaptation for this particular body of water.

As a side note, I often wondered how fish are introduced into a man-made body of water... I spoke with a DNR officer many years ago and he said that the ducks and geese do this when they fly from one body of water to another... the eggs get stuck on their feathers and feet, and provided that they don't dry out in flight, they can be introduced that way... I thought it was an interesting theory.

I've heard this before too.

I believe that theory too...

Plus Osprey.

But also, I don't know of it is required, but I read an article about stocking ponds...

There are different groups and type of fish recommended to keep it alive!

Down to the mosquito eaters....

A "dead" body of water is just a mosquito hatchery.

@SKBonsaiGuy what color are you seeing? My phone is jacked...this one is greenish gold.

But I've noticed every fish has the ability to change color to match the water to some degree.

Your fish looks like a typical Northern Pike that we see here... I'm talking more like "gold", with a little tingle of neon/fushia green... they are very vibrant, I was shocked when I first saw them, and though that it was an oddity just because they were young, but later that afternoon, I caught a 10-12 pounder that was the same colour and a smaller (maybe 5 pounder) that got away right at the shoreline; was the same...

Here, you will never find a body of water that has Pike without having walleye (pickerel)... most times they will also have perch.

... a 2 day blizzard; not all that common occurrence in the last 30 years, but it should get me back in the running for the Craftsman "Snowsuit and Snowblower Model of the Year Award" with @wireme.

The winner gets a pair of wool socks and a can of Beans and Spork that you can heat on the muffler while you're blowing snow. :)

If you are cruising thru Illinois, and you happen to see 3 or 4 kayaks paddling down a river.....

Look to see if one of them is rigged with a bass fishing setup on a baby seat.......

That'll be me and My fishing buddy....

Cuz he's having a baby!

A crib on pontoons?

Avoided all the crazies this holiday weekend and headed North for a couple days mid week to get some work done on the cabin. I can never go near the Au Sable without sneaking in some fishing so after getting the yard work done yesterday evening I grabbed the 10wt fly rod and a box of pike flies I have been tying the past few weeks and hit the river for a couple hours. It was more like an October day with the cold drizzle and fog but was well worth it since I had numerous smaller pike chase the fly and then on the last cast this nice one just nail the streamer and put up a heck of a good fight.
