Field maple are the only acception to that rule to my awareness. Peter chan says he saves all the roots from his field maples to start more trees

Malus campestre, what you call "field maple" is one of the few maples that can be propagated by root cutting, and it's very easy, when taken before budbreak, it works all the time.

That's cool to hear that Field Maple is an exception. I have a handful of seeds that I'll be trying to grow this spring, I'll keep this in mind for a few years down the road. Thanks AlainK.

It really needed a repot this year, but I missed that window
it escaped it's pot and is probably 8 feet tall at the moment...May try for an air layer off the top, or I might just hack it back in the summer, not really sure yet.
And root cuttings definitely take on these, I have some pretty interesting ones I wired up. I'll try to gets some pics soon of everything.
