Field grown scots pine

Vance, if you are still following. Could you describe the procedure for encouraging back budding on Scots Pine? Strictly to get budding on leggy branches on a tree that hasn't been grown for bonsai?

In a phrase: Cut back hard in July and eliminate any unwanted branches making sure you leave some stubs to dry out. When you cut back any particular branch make sure you cut it back to active growth. If you cut back to bare wood you run a strong risk of losing the branch. Scots are more forgiving about this than Mugos especially if you cut really strong branches that are vigorous, a Scots is likely to bud a Mugo is likely not to.

Beautiful little pine you have there Rob! Nice styling too.
But like Brian said lowering the apex would be Nice too.
Makes the tree more compact and makes the trunk and base visualy more powerfull.
But different than Brians opinion I would leave the left branch there for counter balance.
Great job!

Thanks Chris.. The left branch does provide balance to the tree, it will stay for now. You never know years down the road though. Also, I have adjusted some things since the pics were taken. I actually raised the left side branch below the apex to close the space. I am counting on a lot of growth in the next 2 years and I am trying to plan the spacing in accordance to the future growth. Also, keeping some space for sun and light to penetrate the interior while it is in training. :D

Update. Been pinching this one here and there over the last week or so. This one is growing well.

Love it! Outstanding little pine Rob! Can't wait to see it in a bonsai container.

Thank you Vance and Mach. I am starting building ramification this season. I pinched the candles, but not heavilly.

REally. What they said. This is exciting to see how good it will be. Great work.

It's coming along very nicely? Any idea what kind of pot you want to put it in?

Hi Kennedy. Yes, a smooth edged, rectangular unglazed pot. Maybe a medium brown or gray in color. However, I will need to compare pots to the actual tree or do some virts to find out what will work best. :D
