how will you get the roots to follow the channels then?

I’ll just plant new rooted cuttings in the channels, pointing outwards. They’ll have nowhere else to go. I plan to let the “trunks” grow upwards, and then directionally prune/wire some of them out horizontally to form a canopy. My hope is that the roots will fuse, but we’ll see. I have some other experiments going with twisted/braided ficus roots to see what happens.

I imagine if you just carve the channels and leave it, eventually the tree will fill it in on its own if it needs to.

They’re all doing well, thanks. Just a bit of growth to end the summer and fall. Here in Zone 10a (outdoors) they slow down pretty well entirely until it warms up a bit.
