I just collected this azalea today, and after looking it over, i'm wondering if i chopped it too much, not enough, or maybe it's too early to tell....

The little stub going off to the right is dead and cracking, and the overall trunk at the moment is 12" tall.

Looks like a nice trunk ! I am not familiar if they backbud with no leaves though. I know these are hard to come by in Georgia as all wild Azaleas are protected there and are illegal to dig up or transplant. :( Good luck with it.

I think you did just fine. The trunk has decent taper and movement. If it has a decent root spread under the soil surface, you've got a great start there. Now's the hard part...doing nothing to it for the next year or two other then watering and feeding. It looks like the weather should start warming a bit, so hopefully you'll see little buds begin to swell on the trunk in the next month. It was good meeting you at the last ABS meeting.

It has been my experience that they backed pretty well. Now,..don't try to rub off buds below your desired height, however. What ever grows this year is there to balance the root mass. To quote the Lorax " I say..let it grow!

I'll leave it alone, thanks for the suggestions. Also, Ed, if you are suggesting that i obtained it illegally, but it was just an old indica from a clients yard that I'm remodeling.

Rid, no I actually said "I know these are hard to come by in Georgia as all wild Azaleas are protected there and are illegal to dig up or transplant." meaning I assumed you collected it from your yard or a store ....
