Kazan Azalea Creation

Not bad, but could be a little better.

the tree is potted too high in the pot. It should be potted lower, with the surface roots more buried. "Exposing the Nebari" the surface roots should not be done early in a tree's development, it is a step for late stages of development, usually after 5 or 10 years of preparation root work. If it has only been a day or two, I'd repot again lower in the pot.

Second, the right most branch, you have wire on it, but have not bent the branch. If you are not bending a branch, you don't need to wire it. Put a little arc or curve into the right most branch, it will look better.

All in all "pretty okay" first effort, my comments are only to help.

Welcome Aboard Bonsai Nut!

Just a couple add ons to the comments by @Leo in N E Illinois Illinois above.

Kazan is a very strong satsuki. However it has its limits. It is prone to lace bug etc damage in the heat. Please keep in a cooler place outside with only morning sun.

Regretfully this isn’t the time to repot azaleas. That is early spring late winter in your case

Azaleas should be totally root washed when changing the media. For younger azaleas the media is best when smaller evenly sized. Small kanuma with 30% water saturated chopped sphagnum often works well in your climate

Kazan is resistant to wire. This has a couple of implications. First one needs a heavier wire and really good technique to bend it so it will not break. Second it springs back to original position, or close to it if not wired well. Finally multiple wiring sessions over 1-2 year periods, taking the wire on and off. is often needed to get the bend to stay in desired position

Lastly, please double check your water hardness and pH. Azaleas like acid environment

Good luck

Great news! That’s a typical strong response for a Kazan that is being handled well. Keep it up and the new leaves will harden off and be ready for the winter.

A Couple notes.

The issue discussed earlier about dissimilar media often shows up in the rain or in the heat of t(e summer. The leaf tips will tell if the azalea is not happy.

We always double check under Kazan leaves for black specks as this the first sign of lace bug infestation. In our area Kazan is the very first to be infected.

Love to see how you azalea progresses!

Cheers
