Fall colors (Japanese Maples)

Do vibrant fall colors appear on young Japanese Maples?
From my limited experience, my JMs less than 4-5 years old do not put on much of a fall show.
Does a tree need to mature to have the ability to have showy fall colors?

I still get good colour on young seedlings.
I understand that Fall colour depends on conditions. Healthy trees, bright, sunny days and cold nights are supposed to give the strongest Fall colour. Maybe your younger trees are more sheltered?

young japanese maple are as vibrant as more mature specimens. Give them more sun!
