I know this is not the best species but I've been falling more and more for local species. Red maple is pretty much everywhere so can't get more local then that lol. I grabbed this one spring 2014 and have been slowing working the roots into what you see and here's where I am now as it got it's first hedging. I will be thread grafting more "roots" down the road as it may need it.

Has a long road still yet but the goal is to have something that looks great and be a red maple lol

There is kinda a straight branch (the trunk to be precise) without (low) foilage what's your idea to cover that?

I think your on the way to make something weird.
Weird can be ok sometimes

I like the idea you've got started here, but if you want something that won't drive you crazy down the road, I would see if there is something to chop back to after the first bend that will eliminate at least half of the straight portion of the trunk. You may be able to talk yourself into it being ok for awhile..... (see my post in the regrets thread...)

You may recall me thinking about digging that one in my yard?

Well I didnt dig it, but I did chop it. It sent out shoots everywhere, low ones and high ones. I have found that if you cut a branch to just the second set of leaves or to where the leaves start to get large, it will put two/three new shoots there and the first set of leaves on those are much smaller. As you know, the newer leaves get progressively larger. So keep repeating this.

Can post pictures of mine if you want.

How about approach/thread grafts too --> Giga's tour de force in grafting!!!
Just yesterday I read a blog post that was placing thread grafts of branches from low on a trunk high on the trunk, in preparation to excise the middle of the trunk (and regrafting the top to the bottom).

Actually that sounds like a lot of fun. Exposed root grafts + thread/approach grafts + trunk graft. Squirrels plant a lot of horse chestnuts in my yard every year. Hmmm, Douglas fir??

Fun project, Giga

The straight section will be addressed when I graft next year and it will take care of the straight trunk and in turn make it more gnarled. I just need to find a bunch a sapplings to do this which will be ez enough. It was started as a fun project and plan on keeping this tree that way with grafts and interesting techniques.

so much work to get done that this one didn't get any root grafts or other work I wanted to do :(

Looks like someone is having some fun! Hey Giga, what has happened to all your starting photos in your threads? I see the current photos, but not the early ones in the threads.

I have no idea, ask @Bonsai Nut , as when the site updated they went bye bye. Forgot this pic

Yeah this tree is a fun one, the other large red maple I have is the gold winner and that will be updated soon. This tree for now will be allowed to grow freely and gain some girth.

I would either:

Or:

In any case, I'd supress the straight "trunk" above the first or two branches, it seems to contradict the twisted roots ans base of the trunk...

Wow very cool, I've never seen a maple in this style before or grown like that.

I must say though, the pics in the first post not being there, I kinda doubt it is the forum's fault. Or not just singularly.
You can still click the images, and it takes you to its original URL so we are out of the forum completely, but the pics don't load. They have been deleted from photobucket, by the looks of it.
