I'm curious about these Encore and Bloom-a-thon Azaleas. Anyone ever try to use one for bonsai purpose?

I agree with that!Big leaves, but anything can be Bonsai!
Yeah, I got this one in July, it just started blooming two weeks ago. They're nice to grow big and have a repeat flower show. They're hybridized (or whatever term) to bloom off and on from spring onward and if their healthy and well cared for they'll do it.
Good plan!I agree with that!
I have an encore in a nursery pot. It is badly root bound. It was on sale for $3.50, last one on the shelf. It has a nice single trunk and will be something cool some day, I think. I'm going to work on the roots and prune it way back after next spring blooms, and put it back in the cut down nursery pot for a while.View attachment 83417

Is this the nursery we will be visiting in the morning? There are a lot more varieties of Encore Azaleas these days, some of them have very small leaves. I'm not sure what varieties they are hybridized from (will have to look into that) but many of the new ones rival Satzuki in flower color and patterns. My favorite nursery has a huge selection of them, some are just stunning. I have avoided them as bonsai material, except for the one I rescued this past spring from next to the driveway. It had been run over and a small section broke off at the base. It had an interesting trunk section but almost no roots. I just noticed that it is actually setting buds for its next bloom.

Well, hope they aren't rooted in to goodYes it is. I went by yesterday and it looks like they have sold out of some of the Kurume and Satsuki varieties. They still have a bunch of the Johga's but they have all been potted up to 3 gal and they raised the price to $15.95, still cheep by bonsai standards![]()
than a boring flower multiple times a year
Agree.. Sure love to see some of the fancy blooms Robert was talking about, but for the most part. I have found Encore varieties to be boring and short lived when given any sort of treatment resembling "training".As an azalea person, I would say don't waste your time with these.
Remember flowering for an azalea is the second biggest stress to them (the first being rootwork). In the ground these trees can handle multiple blooms a year, but in a pot you would probably have a weak tree.
Also, there is nothing special about the flowers. I would rather have a stunning satsuki or kurume flower once a year, than a boring flower multiple times a year.
I am excited about the Azalea I got from you Eric, you think it can bloom next season?Agree.. Sure love to see some of the fancy blooms Robert was talking about, but for the most part. I have found Encore varieties to be boring and short lived when given any sort of treatment resembling "training".

Sounds interesting, I know that some a diff varieties grafted on to one so it will multi bloom. I think we will hit it on the way back. My wife reminded me of last July getting trees and plants on the way down and having to put them on the condo balconyAdam, the nursery has some Azaleas in their own landscaping. Look to the left of porch as you face the building. There is an azalea there in bloom. Not sure it is an Encore, but I believe so. It has three different flowers on it. If I don't make it in the morning ask them what variety it is.
When you coming back? I head to Melbourne Friday Morning and don't get back till the following Friday night.Sounds interesting, I know that some a diff varieties grafted on to one so it will multi bloom.
