Elaeagnus Umbellata 1 and 2

I'd tilt the lowest section of trunk to the right to make the "apex" more vertical. The problem you encountered is the the wire should have been on the outside of the curve, as in the point where you cut to make the next segment the leader. The wire should have been crossing right over the cut mark, so it could pull the branch up into the leader position. But tilting the tree should work well too.

Thank you SO much!

Is this the time to wire elaeagnus? I have 2 in nursery pots and I keep wondering when is the time to repot and when is the time to do trunk chop.

I had actually asked this wiring question a few posts back.. so yes, to wiring now.

I, personally, am waiting till late winter/early spring to perform any hard prune or repotting operations. I‘m treating all my deciduous like this..

Good to know. Thank you!

I still do light-medium shaping pruning on elaeagnus now... for what it’s worth

And as I mentioned in the other thread, you need growth to increase diameter of the trunks, stop pruning so often. That is an activity for after trunks are a couple inches in diameter.

Just trying to help you.

Uhhgg!! All my Elaeagnus got hit by rabbits.. So these are in “salvage mode”.. they’ll be fine.. I’m just taken several steps back and working with less options...

..bring it on!

Well.. (and this is speaking for ALL my last year Elaeagnus) the ones that weren’t completely rabbit-destroyed.. never woke up.. they had next to no protection.. I really thought they could handle it.. but at least I learned something... 🤪these guys are everywhere.. and I’ve scouted a couple nice ones for fall..

That is quite a lesson, isn't it? It is growing everywhere here as well together with Russian Olive. I hope you'll have more success collecting it next now that you observed some of it's needs. Are you going to collect some in the fall or wait for the spring?

I have collected a speciment this spring and chopped it down severly. I wasn't sure how it will respond, but now it has lush leaf growth and the branches are filling up nicely. It back budded strongly and is a joy to watch. When I chopped it, it actually had flowers so I was taking a gamble on it. They do have the most gorgeous leaves, godlen/ silverish and the colour of the branches is deep and pretty. I'm looking forward to see it develop. Here is an olive branch this morning.
I'd love the russian olive too, their branch structure and colouring are stunning. But the large thorns are a bit off putting for me20210627_082708.jpg20210627_083615.jpg

They are like one of my favorites.. ALL Elaeagnus!

I’ve been collecting in fall.. because at least the ground isn’t frozen.. around here, in spring... things begin to break and “wake up” before the ground is even thawed.

Good point, I'm in the same zone as you, so maybe I'll get some this fall. Do you have any in your care currently

I DID end up pulling one in fall..

Well.. i tripped over it when jumping from mossy log to mossy log... I will get a picture of it next time I am out there.

Nice trunk movement, it's growing vigorously
Thank you! It was definitely a neat find.. they are so aggressive that that trunk will most likely gain enough girth in this and next season to warrant a slightly more shallow, wider pot in spring 2023..... get them roots in order.

Thank you for the info and the photo. I'll be checking it's progress so all info/ photos are welcomed

The spot that I'm eyeing for potential collection is frequented by deer who basically trunk chop them each winter. That way trunks are short and stubby. It was surprising that the rabbits managed to destroy them for you, it seems like nothing can kill them. Did you trunk chop this one or was it short like that?
I'm asking bc I'm wondering if I can get away with severe trunk chop in the fall if I do collect something
