Dwarf Mugo Pine first branch pruning from nursery stock

That's likely the problem!

Yep I think it was the july repot. My climate is just too warm. When I find another helpless one to butcher Ill try it “my way”. I can get 2’ candle extensions on my Jbp, mugos cant be that tough 😉

Late Summer/early fall (Southern California) update- the tree survived and none of the branches died. Now the question is what branches to remove and wire. There is also plenty of new buds. Do I let these grow until next spring when I bud select? 24BEB166-CD5D-47DD-8685-F9B6DC614F2C.jpeg6F4C01FF-2A91-4BEB-9049-90808C3A2F75.jpegE2E31F05-A647-4407-A3E7-88ED99B7C964.jpeg

I’m wondering how this tree is doing. Do you still have it?
Here’s the tree now. Will remove wires and do some branch removals soon. Any suggestions welcome.

It also needs repottting at some point, not the best positioning in the pot nor the ideal pot I confess.

Glad to see your tree is doing good and it is in a bonsai pot. It is looking cool! I have one of those dwarf cultivars as well. I jinned a whole half of the tree on mine in one go last year and repotted in spring this year. But only cut the root ball in half and cut and broke the circling roots. Still have more root work to do, going to do the first wiring soon. I found that the dwarf cultivar is less sensitive then the standard mugo pine.

Nice! Thanks for the update. I agree, a more appropriate pot will bring it up a notch. It’s great that your roots have been reduced that much.

I don't know. I think you did a pretty good job with the 1st potting.
Maybe reduce right roots and move planting to the right?
Tack down that big surface areal root, and wire the right branches down
left side needs some thinning and back budding.
At the end of the day, it's what makes you happiest though. Still a nice tree :)

I like the idea of keeping this angle but I would consider taking the apex up and to the right. I’m a fan of changing the direction of the trunk to give it more interest. I’d also jin the current apex. Cool tree.
