All these white things are at the base of my contorted quince extending up some branches. Looks like some kind of pest. Just not sure what it is/if or how it should be treated. This was repotted in the fall and is now covered with extending flower buds/roots through the bottom mesh, so it seems healthy.

I’ve been getting whatever you’ve got for 3 years now on my quinces. I spray a horticultural oil regiment every couple of weeks and they aren’t affecting the plant. Pain in the ass to clean off though.

Looks like some phase of scale. I had similar on a trident maple a couple years in a row, and it was disgusting.

Me neither, but nevertheless, I noticed some white flecks on this trident early in the spring. They didn’t come off easily, and weren’t moving either, so I just kind of ignored them. 3/…

Definitely a hard scale, possibly oyster shell scale. Kind of hard to control on large trees and shrubs but you shouldn't have a problem with this. You can use a brush and manually remove them, spray a dormant oil and also treat with a foliar application when the crawlers become active. Also you can treat with a systemic (not immidcloprid) in early spring before they start to feed. A combination of all is usually best with hard scale.

Brian, your tree appears to have cottony maple scale, they're a soft scale.

Scrape the easys off, then neem and soapy water spray.
