I live in Chile so that would be the only way... Has anyone done it? If you do, send me a PM with a price for three 1 hour lessons. That would be awesome.

Certainly is an interesting idea.

Have you tried watching the training DVDs put out by boon? I used to have them, and they were an EXCELLENT resource when I started out. I highly recommend them.

Nope, never heard of them... a link would be awesome!

Thanks

Yep, you found them! These will teach you a lot of the basics, as well as specific techniques for black pines if you have an interest in growing them. The repotting and wiring one will get you down the right path.

I seriously think your Skype idea is a good one. It would help a lot of remote enthusiasts get started. Maybe its a service you should consider 5 years from now when you are a skilled hobbyist?

I would have loved a downloadable option... I am going to have to think about these. Shipping to Chile is expensive.

Does anyone have a copy of 101 bonsai, and maple bonsai that wants to sell them?

Shipping DVDS shouldn't be that expensive- less then skype lessons. The problem with dvds and books is you can't ask questions specific to your trees.

Youtube is a great resource also. Depending on how you learn, it may cover most of what you need for the basics.

Careful...just like in forums, there are many video there that I consider laughable. As many here consider me laughable. ;)

Kaizen bonsai (Graham Potter) have good ones. Thought he does lots of carving....there are lots of GREAT tip scattered throughout his video you can use for any tree.

Just something personal, but when shipping is more expensive than the product I am buying, I kinda feel like the freight company should not earn more money than the person who actually made the dvd, in this case.

I'm surprised that there aren't online clubs forming and using video conferensing already. The technology is readily available and essentially free. I think I would participate.

Me too!

Wouldn't it be great if all the big names can just stream what they do in their own yard...just the daily thing especially during the spring.

Bonsai reality TV!!! Si are you reading this? You need to produce it! ;)

Even just a small group evaluating and discussing trees and techniques would be fun and useful.

That too and a nice segue to what I missed.

The most useful part I find are show critiques. Look for critiques by; Walter Pall, Ryan Neil, Marc Noelander, etc. (or from any big shows). The lesson from those are priceless!

I second the suggestion of youtube. There are lots of great videos. If you grow pines, search you tube for Ryan Neill. There are several of his lectures on pines available.

Google bonsai blogs. They are a great source of education.

If the streaming was a reality, it would almost certainly be a premium service. Imagine the ad:

Ryan Neil presenting a 2 hour live demo! Large Shimpaku Juniper's first styling!

9.99 to observe. 19.99 to observe and chat live with the artist.

Then you'd have guys in their backyard who just like interaction. Folks right here on the forum. They'd stream for free but maybe there's a "SUBSCRIBE" button. Just a little donation for the insight.

This is an actual model for professional video game players btw.

The first Ryan Neil critique video I watched taught me how to look at a tree. And it fired me up more than anything since the first time I saw Brian's Hawthorn in person.

Viva video.

And I really could jump on a Skype band-wagon!
