Plant in pot...sun shrivels leaves.
Repot in "better" soil..... quince recovers.
Move to dappled sun..... leaves wither and die.
Take off scrummy leaves.... quince recovers.
Wire a limb..... limb dies.
Wait a while... quince recovers.
Remove dead limb... leaves wither.
Wait a while... quince recovers.
Wire limbs.... limbs break.
Attempt to "style"..... ALL leaves wither.

Put aside and wait..... ???????

I purely HATE this damn quince!

Are the leaves getting fungal issues before they wither? I find that my Chinese quince is bombproof, but my chojubai are very susceptible to fungus, and this year was a bad year for fungal issues. Limbs breaking sounds like a user problem, not a tree problem, just sayin...:)

Lol, what’s the time frame that all of this is taking place? Maybe your pushing it too hard?

Year and a half.

I think I've discovered the secret, though.

Stick in pot, do not post about it, have some rum and coke.

OR.....

Avoid quince like the plague. :)

Anecdote:
I found a BEEYOOTEEFUL little quince at Lumberjack before they went broke.
The guy WORKING THERE (an EMPLOYEE) was also somewhat "into" bonsai.

I took the prize to the counter and he said it was SOLD!

WHY IS IT HERE THEN? ...your fearless correspondent asked.

"Well, the guy is gonna pick it up ...later." the EMPLOYEE lied gracefully if amateurishly.
So I came back the next day. (suspecting that the creep just wanted it himself.

And....yep...there it was.

Soooooooooooo....... I hid it.

But not good enough. The dirty dog found it where I had mixed it in with the begonias (or whatever it was)

I would not have minded if the turd had just taken it home. Probably he didn't get paid yet.
And so it went for a week. The bastard NEVER took time off. Not even lunch I don't think.

Anyhow.... I just said the hell with it and have no idea what ever happened to it.
.....snif....

It's been 10 or more years now. I suppose I should have shot him.
But there are limits to what one should do in pursuit of the art of bonsai.

(I think)

Don't think so. They turn all burnedy looking and finally drop.
If I don't do a THING with it, it sprouts new leaves and fools me into thinking I can DO something with it.
I think it's the QUINCY SYNDROME that manifests to keep me humble. ;)

Ok so I'm not sure what the problem is but...

Think like an apple. They will only flower on new wood. However, if you wait in the spring until they flower, and prune them hard, they will (if strong) push a 2nd round of new growth and flowers that is smaller and less robust. You need to leave them alone at this point if you want them to fruit. It is all about timing of your pruning.

Also they do not like shallow roots or high pH soil. They need full sun at all times... but can be susceptible to hot dry wind. Think sunny but humid. I find that if properly fertilized they grow like weeds here in full sun... but they get finicky if the water or soil is not right.

Chinese Flowering Quince.....tough as nails...... even flowers in winter the crazy thing.

They don't seem to mind being run over by cars..
Quince are the number 1 ornamentals for car parkings in my country. Which is a good thing, because it means there's basically a football field sized patch of them in nearly every town.

I think they'll do well as long as you don't care for them. They're like printers.

You may be referring to Japanese quince, a shrub with many varieties that can bloom throughout the year. Chaenomeles.
Chinese quince is Pseudocydonia, and grows like a tree, exfoliating bark.
