Delve into a newbies garden! 😎

The hornbeam is on its way to me. Thought I'd upload the photos Yannick provided rather than uploading my own when it arrives - I'm sure these will be much better photos than what I'd take! Going to need some work on the nebari next year.

Any thoughts of course welcome and appreciated 😊

Posted this in my fuchsia thread the other day but didn't get many views...unsure whether that's because it was just missed, or whether it was just naff (probably the latter 😂 😂 ) No offence taken - I'm just extremely bored in isolation!

Anyway...here it is - thoughts appreciated! I guess the sketch depicts a kind of clump style?

It would involve having that long straight (eyesore) branch at the back (quite probably shorten significantly, or just remove?)

The small branch near the large cut at the top middle would become the new main trunk/branch. I haven't drawn the cut scar on the sketch, not sure how well fuchsia chops heal?

Love your fuchsias! They only sell them around here as annuals, I usually get one to enjoy on the patio. Yours have inspired me. I'll pick up a couple next spring and see what I can make of them.

Thanks very much - means a lot coming from you! They really are lovely and seem to still flower very late in the season (mine are still going). Really nice contrast to bare! Hoping mine will be fine through the winter, pretty mild in comparison to other places so I think they'll do fine 😊

Definitely make a post if you do get some, I'd love to see

They are not hardy here, so they are only sold in the spring. :(

The hornbeam arrived! Took some quick photos.

So I'm presuming the roots need sorting before even thinking about branch work. As you can see - roots heavily dominant on one side...

First big chop on a tree done! Harder than it looks, especially if you have weedy arms 😂 Now to clean up and apply cut paste. Any advice?

Hello again! Been a while, hope you are all well 👋😊

A few very badly taken photos (super cold!) of my garden at present... Really going to welcome spring! 🥶❄️

Been keeping an eye on the fuchsia, probably should've done more to protect it, but life got busy. Fingers crossed for it 🤞🏻

Clorgan!!!

Was wondering where you’d gotten to?

🤓

Glad to see you, friend.

Make sure you hit the “Can we get a security check-in?” Thread in “The Tea House”.... because we care!
🤣🤣🤣

😂😂 Never fear clorgan is here...

I had a very gruelling few months work-wise, bloody covid!

Nice to see you still pottering about on here, hope you've been dandy!

A few very badly taken photos (super cold!) of my garden at present... Really going to welcome spring! 🥶❄️

It is a bit on the cold side in the UK at the minute isn't it!
I've got a bunch of larch and some maples that started to open buds a couple of weeks ago. Now it's -3.

I really love that Potentilla. I've not managed to find one of a decent size yet myself. Any ones have any suggestions for a source?

Very cold! However I'm sure nowhere near the temperatures of some of the overseas members here... I feel bad for complaining 😂 yeah some of my maples have started to bud too, spring is coming! Anxiously waiting on all of my fuchsias. Has your collection survived the winter?

Thanks very much, have to say it is my favourite. Mine was from Yannick Kiggen - great guy and has tons of amazing material, really reasonably priced too. Unfortunately he's not currently posting to UK due to brexit stuff! I was struggling to find a decent sized one too before I was pointed to him

Brexit seems to have took a lot of EU tree options of the table at the minute (Or delivery prices have become extortionate).

Pretty sure most of my trees are doing OK. I had to repot a few that were about to leaf out early so they're wrapped up in my shed to try and keep the roots from freezing!
I should get some photos up in this thread soon as I built a new bench and some stands at the end of last summer. Just need some nice trees to fill them now!

I know - and I generally find UK online bonsai stores are just ridiculous prices?!

Fingers crossed they all do well for you! Would love to see some photos, I'm hoping to build some form of bench this year

Good to see you back Clorgan!

So sorry about the teaching being so tough right now. My daughter is a VP in a school nearby and the remote stuff is driving the staff crazy. In 3 weeks they have a limited opening for K-2. That’s gonna be interesting. Just like school starting all over again.

Love to show you trees back, yet Mother Nature has put her foot down on most of the states, including ours. Not fit day fer man not beast!

cheers

Thanks very much!

Oh gosh, I can't imagine being in charge, must be a logistical nightmare for her! I've actually been in school for the majority for key worker and vulnerable kids, but doing home learning stuff for the others too. It's a very strange time, hopefully back to some sort of normality soon.

That's some impressive snow!

Being two recently retired teachers at our house, we are glad that we chose to pull the plug when we did. Also so sad for all of the teachers bearing the brunt of this pandemic. We all hope that this will be over by next fall... for everyone around the world... that may be too much to wish for?

This is a once every year Seattle snow dump, but unusual in that the snow as really fine. Next will be a rain on snow event, breaking off branches and toppling trees that will pull down power lines. So folks all around the area will lose power. Hopefully we'll dodge the bullet this year!!

So those trees are starting to look very promising! Well done on a productive first year.

cheers

We can hope! Seems you got out at a good time. Really feel for the kids, they've missed out on so much. But we do our best!

Oh wow, fingers crossed for you! Thanks for the kind words, appreciate it 😁 this will be a big year for my beginner self - several repots and hopefully some more substantial thoughts about styling!
