Deformed leaves and new growth turning black

I don't think it is fungal. Agree with leaf scorch. Mine get it some in Georgia and I normally cut them off (assuming a few) and just move them to a shadier spot for a bit. Not sure of your climate exactly but I imagine they don't like the lack of humidity.

I’m having this issue on a lot of my young maples this year.
Did you ever figure out if it was due to sun or fertilizer?

I defoliate mine and apply what @Smoke recommend which is daconil.
After that all the growth doesnt have that black stuff.

On the other hand I also put filter into my tap water. not sure if this helps as well.

Note: dont defoliate weak trees.

the tree did not make it unfortunately :( i tried every fungicide i could think of and nothing worked (clearys3336, subdue 2e, subdue max, mancozeb, etc.). all the new growth eventually turned black each time it tried to push out new leaves.

i'm hesitant to think it was sunburn/heat because the black spots that showed up on new growth were random over the leaf. i'm under the impression that leaf scorch occurs from the tip inward.

pretty sad about this loss, especially since i wasn't able to determine what was wrong or how to fix it. to lose and tree and learn nothing is the worst.

I am seeing something similar now with 2 of my maples. I am almost positive it is not sunburn/heat because it started after I moved them to a more protected area. Plus I always see a ton of sunburn/heat in Texas on my maples it it mostly starts from the tips of the leaves and is more brownish and not this black.

I have something similar on a small JM but after a pair of "burned" leaves, the next ones are coming up fine. I didn't spray anything.
Don't know how much they'll grow now since it's becoming cold.
