Deciduous tree dormancy?

Back and forth back and forth....

I talked to the nursery right around my corner. He either puts all his Japanese Maples that are potted in the ground up to the level of the pot, or covers them about a foot over the pot edge with mulch and said they live.

So I figure if I do both I'll be extra safe. In the ground with mulch piled up.

The random spring thaws and freezes may require the garage it sounds like.

I leave all my Deciduous trees in the cold frame until I am sure that it is safe to put them on the bench.
I leave the cold frame uncovered unless we are forecast to have a freeze or frost.
I used to overwinter my trees in the garage but it stays too warm in there and they all leafed out too early which caused a lot of problems

Which is pretty much what I advised a few posts back

FWIW here’s A photo of one of my overwintering beds with bald cypress, cedar elm, winged elm and satsuki azalea. Some of which aren’t visible because of the snow cover. Under the snow is six to seven inches of mulch on top of the pot surface. Pots are placed on bricks at their corners to aid drainage and those bricks are on the patio surface. Been doing it this way for over two decades now. I’m in zone seven but we get sub zero freezes sometimes. Most of these trees have been through at least one subzero cold snap over the years.

As far as propagating willows. I don’t know why not just do the cuttings in spring? They are the easiest to do. As easy as succulents. No need to store them in a garage all winter. No sorcery needed lol.

Propagating them had nothing to do with it, it was just the video wintering in a garage came up in.

I threw a cutting in water 3 days ago and a little root is already forming.
