Dealing with social media

The most toxic behavior I’ve ever encountered on social media was right here on Bonsai Nut. A user exploited the site feature that allows you to trim the post you’re quoting in order to craft a death threat that they wrote and falsely attributed to me. They made it look like they were quoting and responding to something I said, but I never said any of the text they “quoted”. I reported it and @BNut deleted their fake message and replaced it with a message calling them out for their fake post.

As for YouTube, it’s long been the case that the comments there are a cesspool. Best thing you can do is turn comments off, IMO. You’re not the first bonsai person to encounter the nastiness there. I recall Bjorn saying that he stopped having his wife appear in his YouTube videos because of the comments that his videos got when she was in them.

Thx.

It is what I do indeed. I ignore comments that are not personal. If they try to hit me or my person, I block them. 2 comments I Have now repoted to Youtube, hoping they block the persons access to the whole to YT. It is just so.. Straaange.. I mean, I do differ of opinion at times and will make comments that may sound rough; But just attacking a person.. Odd behaviour!

I like the T-Shirt Idea. Maybe I should start making comment-based t-shirts :)

don't pay attention to them
thx
what's your youtube channel I would like to follow it
Beware what you are getting yourself into. This Dutchies accent is thick as butter, if I may believe the comments.

I love your videos! Ignore or disable the comments. Comments like the ones you mention are often made by people with personality disorders, i.e. psychiatric conditions.

Long ago when I first went on line, I decided to always use my real name, or some recognizable version of it. This is to remind me never to post anything I would not say to someone in person.

thx

Good thinking. I at times tell myself to think before posting: Would I say this to a 7ft assertive bodybuilder in person?

I see this crap all the time and you’re not alone @leatherback. I think some people see it as a mile marker in the growth of their online presence. Once you get a certain amount of attention the trolls come calling. I would say don’t waste your time or headspace on them and just keep doing your thing. I have always enjoyed your content and found it to be valuable. As they say, “don’t let the turkeys drag you down”.

They only win if you take offense. What should you do? Laugh at them in your next video... "I killed this tree four years ago.... its still growing great though"
this is exactly when I am doing: A 2 year progress of a tree that may are saying I ruined.

Next Time take a look at their profiles, I bet they don't create content or even put their face to their profile, they are trying to put you down because you are doing something they clearly cannot do.

As for the tree killing I really like the way your vids show follow up, it clearly takes a lot longer to make than a lot of content created in bonsai but its worth it to show the full picture, I have seen one where the tree didn't survive and you were not only brave to post it and show your failure (you could have just not put the vid up and no one would know), you also accepted responsibility (lack of patience) and owned your failure.

even when they are only there to be negative, your views will go up each time, they are bringing traffic to your channel and you can always delete the hurtful comments and keep the views.

Keep your head up, and keep doing what you're doing, try not to let it bother you and focus on the positives, which I hope outnumber the negatives!

LOl well there's karma... you have done the same to people here so suck it up.;)
On the progression thing though - I always dream it is an ancient japanese secret to bring out the worst flaws with abuse and disease even, then gentle it back to health, making a truly appreciable work that reflects struggle.

just ignore them and keep the videos coming.
I enjoy watching them

Dear All,

Many of us are on social media, and post about our trees and their progress. I am sure several of you have encountered idiotic remarks of people clearly not understanding what is going on. Recently I have noticed an uptick in very harsh, insulting, personal comments to the point I feel like just not posting anymore. "Moron with double ulcers" is one of them. "Die like you kill this tree" is another that comes to mind. The posters were blocked from my account, but I also realize people who just want to troll make a new account and continue.

I was wondering whether who has experience with this, and how you deal with this.

J.
Never empower your enemies. If their aim is to annoy you or belittle you, ignore their comment and delete it in less time than it took them to write it :) Do not participate in the conversation and move on to someone else who has something more productive to offer.

"Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and the pig enjoys it."

I think it echos much of what has been said here, but engagement is the lifeblood of the perpetually online. I believe those in the realm of psychology call it "grey bricking" where you make yourself an entirely unappealing target for narcissists by refusing to humor their fantasy or perpetuate their narrative. Sure, they'll have a tantrum across the span of a few posts. Though shortly afterwards they'll move on because they know somewhere on the expanse of the web that somebody will feel the compulsion to combat them.
