Darn squirrels

Best way to avoid intense squirrel damage is NOT to grow small trees. Grow big bonsai, the thicker bark and bigger trunks aren't as interesting to rodents. You can also encourage predators, like I do. Instead of killing snakes, I ignore them. They are the BEST rodent deterrent out there... This black snake has been around my backyard since he was a pup six or seven years ago.

Damnn black ratsnake seems like perfect defense..id love that if circumstances were different ahah
My dogs live with my dad otherwise theyve always been a good deterrent as well...im feeling the snake tho

squirrels were my biggest enemy until I started growing my trees in inorganic (or mostly inorganic) soil. They don't touch my bonsai trees anymore. But, at least once a year I forget and try to grow spinach, hot peppers, whatever in regular old potting soil and the squirrels roto-til the pot within 6 hours

My mixes are mostly 50/50 or 60/40 for the most part but maybe that's why they're only partially tearing it up LOL

It looked pretty earthy in the pic, but i guess the grit is there now that I look at it. I never use moss either, I notice it draws attention. Folks on here say its birds that move the moss but I can never tell where the destruction comes from

There is a squirrel that always snoops around d my deck in almost sure its him lol my girls daughter took pic of him on chair looking down at that pachysandra tray lol hes been plotting

I always go outside with shell covered peanuts in my pocket/bag in case I see one of the little ones foraging. I buy the nuts especially for the squirrel family that lives here. 4 red and 1 black (Color mutation of a red I guess) squirrel.

this is the time of year it starts for me, I dont have issue all year and then they come every day lol
Same here. We have tons of the little tree rats, but they only start digging around in the fall. I have a variety of things pop up in my pots during the winter from the "gifts" they leave.
