Cutting off trunk

Cut off looks to be in good place. Change angle if possible so apex nearer to center of balance. Develop new surface roots after removal of bad ones and off to the races.

I plan to make one more cut at the 90° angle in the trunk. To make it a formal upright. Dose this sound like a good idea to you? Check out this picture above.
 
Be carefull cutting this. The rootstock seems regular green japanese maple. You cut too low, you will loose the cultivar.

Personally I do not bether with trees ike these. The graft will not look better over the years. It might be worth trying to layer the plant just below the graft.
