I spent two days with Bob Shimon along California’s Mendocino Coast — both out in the field collecting redwoods and oaks, and back in his garden surrounded by decades of collected and show worthy trees.

When I first started my YouTube channel, my goal was never just to style trees — it was always to eventually tell the deeper stories behind the people, places, and history that shape this art form. While I still love designing and styling on camera, this short documentary is the piece I’m most proud of publishing to date.

It also marks the beginning of a new series — stories about the individuals who’ve quietly shaped the North American bonsai scene, often without the recognition they deserve. Bob felt like the right place to begin.

I’d genuinely love to hear what moments stood out to you after watching.

If you’re interested in purchasing a tree from Bob (he's got some incredible material), please check out his website at mcbonsai.com

PS — if the beginning of the film seems too dark and moody…. brighten ya damn screen!

Very cool! My rule of thumb is that collecting trees always takes twice as long as you think it will.

And nice root slayers!! Those were my most effective tool against the recent "snowcrete" here in the DC area. :)

cool video, well made, such beautiful scenery, thanks for sharing.

Thank you! The root slayer is a must have for sure.

Appreciate it! Need to get up to Tahoe and see that Sierra if you still have it.
That would be awesome, I’d be happy to have you whenever and take you collecting if you like I just got my permits for this year
