Collected sand pines (pinus clausa)

Cool, there's a nursery in CFL I can get them from. Only a few nurseries have them. I think they would do well in any soil as long as it is free draining. I need to buy more to torture

Try it. I think it’s only the previous year’s growth falls off, but I’m not sure how many seasons the needles will last for. I have one smaller seedling that seems to have all its needles it was born with still on main trunk. I will needle prune this one hard in the hope it sets dormant buds in trunk. In the past I’ve tried to collect a few more mature small trees with 1-1/2 - 2” trunks, because I noticed these trees had some adventitious budding on the trunk, and seemed to be a perfect candidate for bonsai. However, they all had big taproot issues and none survived. So adventitious backbudding is possible, I’m just not sure what’s the best way to stimulate it. It is a fire resistant tree at maturity, similar to Pond Pine or slash Pine, so perhaps bark damage/ layer removal may or may not also help stimulate dormant buds.
Hey so I pinched needles on a few of my smaller sand pines last month and indefinitely got a few (1-2) back buds to set already. A also am trying another technique where if there is sparse branching, taking the lowest branch and topping above to make that the new top leader and then needle prune. This successfully created a trunk taper and stimulated even more (6-8) new buds for branches. As of now, this seems like a winning technique to thicken the trunk egg ramify.

I just got a bunch of sand Live Oak’s from a native nursery. Quercus geminata, they have a really small leaves and can take heat really well. The bark also it’s pretty interesting in early trees. Got a wide selection of 3-15 gallons to operate on.
I got interested after collecting this other one.

Weaponman...

How are the sand pine's coming along? I just picked up my first 1" diameter sapling from a nursery in Parish FL.

Thanks!

So a few things.
Killed my biggest yamadori last year during repot. Fine root system more or less fell apart on me and too much got removed. Maybe need to pot less often or super gently. My other was fine repotting at same time. Root system was a bit more developed.

For the seedlings, I needle plucked and top pruned in fall. Backbudding ensued, but one that I top pruned and needle plucked died, so I probably overdid that one, just took off too much. The others are looking good, nice back budding directly under top leader prune on main trunk. They are all still pretty small though. Need to juice them up and I’ll probably decandle half of them and let the other ones go to see how they react.

Just experimenting still
