Collected coast redwood

I will conclude by saying I have no idea if any of this will work. Open to suggestions. Thanks for coming to my Red Talk.

I know absolutely nothing about reds, but do know a bit about bald cypress, and know that some people have made similarities between the two.

With the above in mind, I like the dropped branches - I would be adding a bit more side-to-side to them if it were a BC I had.

If you're happy with the trunk thickness, I would be tempted to shorten it and perhaps make a jin feature or split/hollow. To me it looks very tall and skinny.

Yea, I still have the option of lopping off down to the next pair of branches. I'm going to wait and see what it looks like with foliage and when photographed from a proper angle at the soil line. Trying to emulate a giant. The trunk proportionality is good, but the taper is a bit lacking at the top.

The only real similarity is the frond like foliage. Are you thinking of dawn redwood? Coastal is evergreen, bald cypress and dawn redwood are deciduous conifers.

@Mikecheck123 I personally like redwoods with a bit more taper, but that is my opinion. I have two like that and chopped them both :)

Let me show you my inspiration: "The Giant" in Henry Crowell State Park. See it now? :-)

Yes, yes I was thinking of dawn redwood! I learnt something new today - thanks! :)

Ive seen it in person ;)

Noble inspiration, but I have found personally that such majestic scale doesnt translate well to bonsai.

I think the reason is the redwoods are so gigantic, you cant get far enough back to see the entire tree in such dense forests. Or so was my experience.

I think it's a good use of the material, but it could be shortened....and an old rounded apex will need to added to your virt.
Reminds me of one of my BC's.
Keep it alive!

Any update on this one?
Haha wow! I had no idea anyone would remember this. It turned out fantastically. One of my proudest collected trees.

But then I moved to Virginia and sold it to someone on Craigslist. I think they paid me $200 for it. Not bad!

Here's my last photoshoot of it in May 2021:
