Those are indeed nice roots - looks like it recovered well time to put the smackdown on it!
I know absolutely nothing about reds, but do know a bit about bald cypress, and know that some people have made similarities between the two.I will conclude by saying I have no idea if any of this will work. Open to suggestions. Thanks for coming to my Red Talk.
Yea, I still have the option of lopping off down to the next pair of branches. I'm going to wait and see what it looks like with foliage and when photographed from a proper angle at the soil line. Trying to emulate a giant. The trunk proportionality is good, but the taper is a bit lacking at the top.I know absolutely nothing about reds, but do know a bit about bald cypress, and know that some people have made similarities between the two.
With the above in mind, I like the dropped branches - I would be adding a bit more side-to-side to them if it were a BC I had.
If you're happy with the trunk thickness, I would be tempted to shorten it and perhaps make a jin feature or split/hollow. To me it looks very tall and skinny.
No, mostly weeds, but there was one coast live oak seedling!Really nice! Were those little baby redwoods in the roots picture???
Cool! I've got a bunch of coast live oak seedlings growing right now. Good luck with the redwood; I really like it!No, mostly weeds, but there was one coast live oak seedling! Not sure if it will survive, but I potted it up. It has just one leaf.

Let me show you my inspiration: "The Giant" in Henry Crowell State Park. See it now?The only real similarity is the frond like foliage. Are you thinking of dawn redwood? Coastal is evergreen, bald cypress and dawn redwood are deciduous conifers.
@Mikecheck123 I personally like redwoods with a bit more taper, but that is my opinion. I have two like that and chopped them both![]()
