Collected Boxwood (Buxus)

Here is the new front. Part of the move is because it shows the big top branches with more "character". It also hides the 3 major chops (until they become features) ;).

I plan on giving the left branch a slight bend and use the small branch at its base for thread grafting.

What do you think?

I kinda like the first image better. Base seems stronger to me. The sub-trunks in the crown also look like they have more character in the first, but maybe it's just the pictures.

I think it is just the pics. This side actually shows the sinewy (muscle) trunks. The bark is softer looking (less plating) in this side, maybe that is what is tricking you visually.

hmm Tough call. The apex does seem to be better with this angle and it does hide some chops. However, the old angle might have a better overall tree image. Also, I like the ruggedness of the first front. The rough exterior of the bark with the first front really makes the tree look like an ancient 500 year old tree in a field or mountain. The smooth bark is nice, but I think I prefer the aged, rough bark view. I would stare at it for a few months. Everyday glance at it and then make up your mind.

Quit messing with it. Stacy's vert looks awesome.

here is an idea I came up with...
It involves expanding greatly, the small deadwood at the base of the tree,
and making it a significant part of the tree.
Hope this helps...
I also agree that this is a much better front as well...
:)

Stacy,

That looks awesome. My wife likes it too so definitely in the running for possible future of this tree.

Thanks a lot!!!! :)

Very nice virtual, Stacy. What's holding the apex, though..?

Many of my favorite old trees in nature that resemble these ancient oak style's are very ugly, and would never fit into all of our rules for bonsai. They often don't have perfect taper like we try so hard to attain. I think the ugliness is part of the beauty and rugedness.

I vote don't chop; and I really like Smoke and Stacy's virt's :)

Thanks! You actually had me reviewing and checking the entire thread looking for Smoke's virt (but can't find it). :)

This tree is back to the original front...but rotated a few degrees counter clock-wise. It showed some of the upper branch structure better...especially the "muscles". It is amazing sometimes how a few degrees can make a world of difference.

I just need to address the big chop w/ proper carving and that will be it.

Also bent the right branch tiny bit and I think it helped. I wanted more but it bent my bender instead. :P I might try another method later.

I promise to post pics later. ;)

i wish you had left the lower left branch :(

looks healthy. I'm not sure that I like this angle very much though. hard to say why exactly...

Different taste/prefedrence :) because I am so glad I did. Believe me, the pic doesn't do this tree justice and I checked all possible angles. So far this is the best I can see.

It is far from done, I have a few graft planned...just growing the donor branch. I also need to carve the ugly chop area. It will be done soon. ;)

maybe it would look even better at a little lower an angle and without that harsh shadow behind it. just a thought.

Yes, front is actually a bit lower but the pads are still "flat" but once they grow a bit it should look much better. Also, the 2nd branch (Y) to the right will both be reduced/shortened after the graft took. :)
