I collect a few American Hornbeams late this winter/ early spring. All of which are leafing out, except one, the one I’m most excited about… typical as far as that goes I guess. Its bubs seem to still be swelling and the tree actually looks healthy. Is it actually that late for leaf out in western NC zone 7? Is there something I can do to help it along? Do I need to just chill?

If the buds are swelling, it might just be a little behind or sulking the collection. I'd just watch it and water when it needs it. You can't really do much more than that honestly. It will either grow or not.

I’m in charlotte and I’ve had them be way behind the rest of the hornbeams. I have one or two that are still swelling buds. Give it time. You will know for sure by June.
