I normally would remove these, as these will cause additional swelling along the edge of the wound..

Good to know. Thanks. In the case of such a large wound, do you think the additional growth will increase the chance for the cut to completely callous over? I’m am ok with some swelling if it would benefit healing.

Keep them until they are becoming a problem or you just don't want them anymore, IMHO.

I do not know. If you get branches to pop right below your cut, I would not be concerned with die-back. In fact, I do cuts in summer exactly because the risk of die-back is not so great then. I did put some thoughts in a video on this a bit back:

Im going to keep the sprouts for now to maximize growth. Though vigorous, the tree was dug up only a year ago.

Does anyone have styling suggestions for this vine maple? The nebari is unique, octopus-like, but mostly one sided…

Chopped back the large branches and repotted.
Each “foot” of the nebari divides into bunches of fine roots. The area between the feet and underneath the base of the trunk is open. The soil could be removed to create a cavity. Like a bears den underneath a giant forest maple.
This tree seems to prefer sprouting from its base over growing at the ends of its long branches.

So far, they’ve mostly been ignoring the Japanese maples and instead go for the Vine maples.
The initial strategy was squish and wipe but now there’s just too many too often. I broke out the neem spray (2.8 tsp concentrate/32oz water). I’m aware of the risk of neem oil on maples but war is war.
Trees were sprayed yesterday evening to hopefully limit stomatal clogging from the oil. It rained last night, leaves appear “clean” this morning.
So far, they’ve mostly been ignoring the Japanese maples and instead go for the Vine maples.

I would rather use Sevin spray in conjunction with some sort of systemic like the Bonide granules. I wouldn't be too incline on using neem with the warmer temperatures coming up, I've seen quite a few bad stories here.

Thanks for the feedback. I considered the sevin but wanted to play it safe. Perhaps if things get worse.
For now, neem seems to work. The maple is noticeably better today.

Strong growth. Becoming more of a tree and less of a stump day by day.
In a week or so, the long shoots will be cut back to the triangular silhouette within. Maybe not the bottom right branch.
Internodes are too long in some places.
Internode length is ok for this part of the tree.

If this is the image you are going for, don't trim the lowest branch - let it run, so it will thicken and become the heaviest branch on the tree (otherwise, it will look like a weirdly shaped broom, IMO). Definitely trim the apex.

There are 4 main branches growing close to the chop mark. Some need to be removed. The flat chop will eventually get carved.
A large root appears partially dead. The tree was not potted deeply enough last spring.
