CMU's 2024 Vance Wood Memorial Mugo 4 Year Contest Entry

Picked up these two Mugos from a local nursery over the weekend. 2# containers. These were the first I've seen at any nurseries this season so will keep my eye out in the next few weeks for any better candidates. Haven't done anything other than set them on the ground under one of the benches.

Finally got around to repotting these today. Very rainy morning here, it was rather soothing sitting just inside the garage working on trees. Of the two I posted previously, one was just terrible (don't know which one it was) - terrible trunk and it was so leggy that I'm not even going to consider it for this contest

So for now I'm going to keep going with this one. Cut off half the roots with a saw, wasn't much in the way of circling roots, but I raked them out a bit and pruned downward growing roots. Pruned probably a bit more than half the foliage. But I felt comfortable with that - I started three mugos following Vance's method two years ago and they've done really well. Potted in Bonsai Jack organic mix with a bit of mycorrhizae inoculant mixed in. Will just let this grow until next summer and start wiring & pruning to see if I can actually turn it into something lol.
