CLUMP KIYOHIME ON IBIGAWA

One question: does width of clump dictate the depth of the rock? A shallow pot seems obvious here (but I think I understand how it relates to a singular tree/trunk and width) given such depth of rock.

Yes! Like everything in bonsai is all about striking the right balance and proportions to make for a successful and believable bonsai. It very much depends on the story and feeling you want to communicate. In this case the stone was chosen to portray a copse of tees on top of a rocky cliff or outcrop. If we used a shallower stone it may then portray a rocky landscape instead. There is also always a threshold in proportions. What I mean by that is one must be aware of the the visual hierarchy. You don't want the viewer to see your rock, slab, pot, stand, etc before they see your tree. So proportions are critical.
