Clump Hornbeam

I went to photograph the tree, and every leaf has gone! I will do a nekked photo of it this week as I do my yearly strip show... 😇
That's too bad. Well, if you run into any historical pics with fall color, please post. Else we wait till next year. Lovely tree though!

I'm surprised that I had not updated this tree since 20! It's come a long way since the first photo on the thread.... After winter pruning and just a little wire. First photos front, last is back, but it looks good from that side too. Sorry for the wet lower trunk, but it was ready for a drink. I see a couple upper right branches that need to come back further now that I see the pics. And looks like the back lowest left two branches as well, but am hoping to thicken those two, so I'll leave them until hardening off to see if I can get some build on those. Pot by Benda

Thanks guys, I'm still considering loosing the 4th trunk... LOL. It looks much better when it's not wet, will update at some point at bud swell/break.

Which trunk were you thinking of losing?

I didn't know you had a thread about that tree smh... I'm so hurt 😉. It seems to have come a long way since you first got the tree. Really amazing work you have done. I'm not sure if a 5th tree will really improve the planting all that much and finding one with the right age could be a bit of a chore. I admittedly didn't read the Entire thread and just seen that you are thinking of removing one tree. I'm hoping that means an airlayer instead of just cutting it out wasting the work you have already done to it getting it all nicely ramified and aged.

If an airlayer,,, I got First dibbs on the odd man or woman out!

I agree, with 3 they won't look so in line with each other also. Not sure if you ever play with AI but here's what it looks like with it removed if that helps you out.

I do the towel version of AI lol… in person they don’t really look as aligned as in photos, I should post a photo from overhead. Been contemplating this for a lot of years and still not sure.

Thanks! I’m a big waffler on this one.

Why not add a fifth trunk?
Yes that is one option I’ve thought about, even asked about it in tree buying forum. Going to be really hard to find a small tree with this sort of age on it and the type of twisty elements to match up with what is there. But I do like that idea as well.

I was imagining a graft.
