Dogwood Chronicles #15, my lucky number 🙂

Will and my other Dear Readers,

I’m not sure, maybe! Could anyone catch anything with that PA system? 😜 The only one I managed to hear was the award for best chuhin.

Feels pretty cool to have put the moss on a nationally awarded tree. It’s affirming to know the judges agreed; my favorite of the 6 fantastic client trees Tyler worked on was indeed exceptional. I am a small small piece in a very talented puzzle involving decades of daily care. The fascination with the pursuit of the highest level is endless.

This weekend marked a long awaited first visit to Rochester. It was wonderful to finally put a face to Tim, the winning chuhin’s owner, and the rest of the loyal Dogwood Studios patrons who made trek to the tippy top of New York. Thank you to all who came by our booth to chat, helped us carry a tree or three, and of course, special thanks to those who purchased a bonsai from us. Please come visit the garden in North Carolina for an intensive study weekend to continue to develop it to become a future National Exhibition winner!

This weekend marked another first. I got the chance to speak with one of my contemporaries in person, Mr. Brandon Roberts of Bonsai Mirai. It is safe to say, our Boss’ see bonsai quite differently. The contemporary and the classical. Descending from Kimura and Suzuki, the first and last apprentices of Hamano. On his deathbed Mr. Hamano told Mr. Suzuki, “make good bonsai, make good apprentices.” Perhaps it’s also safe to say that what they do see the same, is the spirit of our ancestor’s wish. I’m stoked to call Brandon a peer, and I look forward to the work he will produce in the years to come.

P.s. I broke my streak for long distance travel without a pot damaged. Over 50 hand carried without incident from Japan and Taiwan, but alas. If anyone wants to price gouge me and flip their blue @NaoTK Canton style round, hit my line.

Love to see you moving through your first year! Sounds like you had a fun time!

Cheers

Great meeting you at Nationals Jacob! I always get very encouraged seeing young people so engaged and passionate about bonsai.
You as well, Sergio! Yes, in this first year of apprenticeship, I can confidently say that my skills are low and the passion is high. Hopefully by the decade's end I can get the two to be more level.

Can we hope to see you again this year for Winter Silhouette? Looking forward to swapping some North Jersey stories, M5!

Unfortunately my schedule will not allow me to be at the winter silhouette this year but I'm sure will see each other at another event.

Keep up the great work!
