Nice. I've found with my HB, that it's best to let it grow out all season and then cut back hard in the winter. They (or at least mine) seem to regulate leaf size on their own once they get a good size canopy going.
Hi Judy, im tempted to trim it back maybe next month. but leaving it until winter might be the best thing to do, especially if i want to aid more callusing. the big leaves dont bother atm as i know its gaining power. ill let it be and update later in the season.

Of course the question is addressed to a specific person (who has already replied) but I thought I'd share my and two of my friends' experience in zone 9a-Mediterranean climate, Carpinus betulus cannot withstand climatic/temperature conditions. However, Ostrya carpinifolia is doing fine.
after the re pot this one went downhill....i was going to sell it to Conardash, but what happened is i think i let it get too dry after re potting and all the leaves had shriveled and there was no signs of new growth emerging. i'd become a little bored with the pigeon breast in the trunk and i think it suffered a little neglect resulting in drying out! ive since replaced it with a better hornbeam, one of my favorite species for sure
