I think I managed to kill this tree. I bought it in May this year and just kept it in the original pot. I didn't do any work at all on it other than watering.

I've been keeping it in full sun and didn't let it completely dry. Pretty much the same way I've been treating my junipers, spruces and broadleafs.

Is there any specific care instructions for this tree that I completely missed out on?

Thanks!20220703_172625.jpg

can you see if the brown foliage falls right off when you brush it, or is it really stuck?

Might as well get rid of all that brown, expose the rest to light and air.. I might try an antifungal, I don't think it's goner.
Good luck!

I think it got dried out, maybe water not getting to center of pot. See if you can poke several holes in soil. I like mine in a little shade, maybe east wall instead of south.

Hard to say honestly. With a deep pot like that, it often dries out at the surface but is still wet in the middle, or the water might not have been able to reach the middle of the root ball as nuttiest suggested.

You've got nothing to loose at this point really. Take it out of the pot and see what condition the root ball is in. Either way, you'll learn something.

Almost certainly dried out on you at some point. Hinoki use a LOT of water, especially with the type of weather we've had the past couple of months (lots of sun, low humidity). I've had a few trees develop sun damage this year that I've never seen before (larch, dawn redwood, spruce).

If the browning began shortly after you acquired it, the tree could have dried out at the nursery before you purchased it.

Yes, of course, take it out and look at the soil, look for dry area. Sometimes you will wonder where all that water is going

I'd say it started to change about 2 weeks after I bought it. I'll try repotting it. I'll post an update later.

Like coh said, could have started issues at the nursery and you don't see it until you get it home. How was the ride? Hot trunk, hot in the car, snow, think back
