Building a pair of box stands.

Sleep? thats for wimps... I do spend a lot of time in the bathroom though. Thats where the inspiration comes from.

Finally two of them together. The one on the right is routed and finish sanded. Once it is routed the profile of all the edges is lessened. The legs look much thinner.

Worked all day yesterday sanding and fitting, installing the dowels, more sanding and the application of color.

Now the tedious task of layers of lacquer and sanding. I hate that part.

wow!! In ten years time when I have at least 5 decent shohin, I will have to come back to this thread.

So finally today I got the last coat on. Sanded down to 1200 ready for trees. So this is the color when seen up close with light. Mostly it is dark with no grain showing wheich is a traditional brown lacquer finish for these stands.



On the table being sprayed.



This is the bottom detail. Much like the picture in the book.



I have no idea why this zig zag blows my skirt up, but I wnated it so I made it.



Now they need to cure for a few days to a week and then the wax is applied. Two coats of min wax will bring out the sheen. They will cure in the house while my wife bitches about the smell of lacquer. She has no sense of taste when it comes to a new car smell. If one had to purchase these, one could figure about $1600.00 for the pair.

I like your squiggly bit (or zigzag as you call it) on the middle shelf better than the other one.

I have 60 hours in labor at $30.00 an hour is $1800.00 plus $400.00 in material, makes these $2200.00 for the pair. That is why I don't make stands for people any more.
