Brightside Bonsai Pots

Good question. It can classify as an octagon but not a perfect octagon. I like the term cut corner rectangle because that is the image that the octagon portrays.

All cut corner rectangles are octagons, but not all octagons are cut corner rectangles. 😁

Going to be doing the first showing of my work with my partner Leah who makes pots with me and does all the photography. It will be at the ATL bonsai club show at the botanical gardens.

Been a busy late winter but here are three from yesterday’s kiln unload I will be taking. Got more coming. Plus a lot of footage for my YouTube channel I am starting. Each video will show how I build certain pots. And it won’t be over once the pot is done. I will show glazing technique and the final pot as well! I think people would find it awesome to have a pot they can see being made. Although the 4 videos aren’t done yet I think the pots will be done in time for the show in ATL.

Variations of the same glaze with different combos. You can see the light blue is consistent in all three.

This is the last pot I completed in this studio I began my journey into bonsai ceramics! This thread has documented that journey well. I haven’t really kept up any of my tree threads. But my tree’s are developing slowly… no they’re not neglected because of pottery… 😑😆

I’m submitting a pot into the bonsai pot competition. But it’s not going to be anything pushing the limits or anything. Just my style I guess. And it won’t be this pot.

But in this pot I wanted curves and angles to dance in a simple way. Although, now I wish I would have tied the feet in with the rim rather the second rounded half. As I built this pot from slabs. I gently compressed and then rounded the lower section. At first as a creative element I thought to just do one side. To sort of lend itself to a semi cascade and continue the flow of the tree. But didn’t like how it was looking. This is how it turned out!

I’ve started to leave the inside of my pots a bit rough and kind of like a fingerprint. I like improvising and building without molds, AI, or CAD. I made over a thousand jewelry molds in my past as a jewelry caster, managing one of the largest mold libraries in North America. That work taught me a lot, but also left me burned out on repetition. The repetition was soul-sucking. If I want or need to remake something, it’s not for efficiency but rather it’s a test of skill. With the individuality those who have my pots I believe deserve.

It took a couple glasses of wine, but I finally pulled the trigger on 4 of your pots 😁
Thank you!!! That round with the blue and green glaze I created. Its name is blue marble. In reference to earth. It reacted well in that firing it was in. I was surprised! I could go on about all of them but I honestly had to talk myself out of keeping the unglazed oval 😆! I’ll get them out to you tomorrow!
