Bonsai Pronunciation

the correct pronounciation in japanese, is how I would reald it in spanish if I saw it written down.
It is actually spelt bonsái here.
Well that helps a lot. We have a guy writing in English to explain the pronunciation of a JAPANESE word by writing it the way they write it in SPANISH!

Kind of like making wine then filtering the water out of the wine just to get a glass of water to drink! LOL

Maybe they want to open a "chicken account".

What was the statement by that all American man, Homer Simpson? "Me fail English? That's unpossible!"

Edit to correct...it wasn't Homer who said that, but Ralph Wiggum. Oops!

Thanks for the correctification.

20+ years ago I was in Japan teaching about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Now in the lesson if I refer to Jesus Christ as Onko, then my listener will understand that I am talking about the Son of God. If I am not careful enough and refer to the Savior as Anko, then my listener will be wondering why I am talking about sweet bean paste put in buns for treats...distracting wouldn't you think. Worse, if I pronounce it Unko, the listener may be confused as to why I am literally talking about shit (literally excrement) in a lesson that is supposed to be about God...

I don't have to correct non-native speakers on the pronunciation, but I do have the dignity to pronounce it correctly and not pretentiously so that to myself I don't feel like I am going to climb into my warplane to go on a suicide mission.

I get it half of you care and the other half couldn't give an Unko about the pronunciation.

Sorry, but "bone" is not the correct pronunciation either. The o is almost a diphthong, as in "show". The o in bonsai is closer to the sound in "door".
So... Everybody who is so snooty about the pronunciation is wrong too then? "Boonsai"?

LOL... Does anybody here even actually KNOW how to pronounce it correctly?

Speaking of pronunciation, there was a website that would speak the scientific name of every plant and tree.
Does anyone have the link to share?

I can't find it now, but maybe http://capewest.ca/pron.html will help.

However, remember, Latin is a dead language. No one now alive has ever heard it pronounced the way Nero pronounced it. Priests and Lawyers use it -- but a bit differently, and with the accents of their native tongues.

"Accents of their native tongues"- all words are spoken this way... Which is why there IS no one correct way to pronounce "bonsai/ Boonsai/ Bonzeye.." It will vary from mine state to another within the US and I suspect vary depending on where in Japan you are located as well.

The o sound in "door" and "boon" are not the same. As Barrosinc pointed out, the pronunciation in Spanish is similar (although the Japanese don't put more emphasis on one syllable than another). If you want to get somewhere close, think of "bornsai" but eliminate the r.

How did John Naka pronounce this word of great discussion?

The B from "Berry good"
The O from ok
The N from not ok
The S from shotgun
The A from America and
The I from bonsai
