Totally understood on the consistency and practice part of dog training......I keep trying to tell my husband that because our great dane mix gets away with murder with him because of his lack of that.
Your second point about Mals being focused on you and only you 24/7 and not an outside dog or not want to be anywhere but with you is why I would only consider one when I retire and can be home with it almost every day. I know about those videos you mention about all the cool things that Mals do. The thing people dont quite get is pretty much any dog can do most of those things too with the right training and time put in. They might not be quite as fast to pick it up or as good at it as Mals but they can do most of it very well.

Tonight my dog got her favorite dinner game "cups" where I split her dinner up into five plastic cups to hide around the house. She gets so excited when I start prepping them.
I feel like a polar bear trainer planning enrichment activities every day.

This is our third standard poodle, so I know about smart dogs. Beau is 3 years old and his first summer someone in our neighborhood (who had know our 2 previous poodles) said, "I could never have a dog that's smarter than me." My thought was that she was fairly insightful to recognize that.
Thirty years ago at neighborhood party, someeone asked about Nash, our 80 pound poodle. I said that he had more personality than some people I knew. The couple I had in mind got up and left the party!

I agree with this sentiment but I would also add "lazy" into the list of undesirable qualities in a dog owner.
An intelligent, active dog doesnt usually do lazy for long

Training this fella... he's a handful. Came from a large litter of nine. So the alone time is hard on him. He's got to be in the thick of it...
I also workout...and he's now crated in the room I'm in. Covered... today he would not settle down. I'm to stubborn to allow him a victory. Or he'll expect that win every time. So I did end up with a headache at the end. But my workout done and that made me feel good.
my aussie turned a year old December 20th. She was so easy...this fella... is a stubborn sweetheart. He just wants in the thick of it. Not alone in a pen. His coloring is considered Blue Trindle... I didn't look around. He came from my breeder. We lost Larry unexpected last year... I put in a hard order to fill...then imagine God chuckling...as nothing is to hard for him. I left it as...we wouldn't add another pup until my color come to fruition...or I had a change of heart. I look at him as a godsend... he came home right before Christmas...and I was struggling putting up the stockings.
As we had lost two dogs last year...and their stockings hold their photo ornament. stockings went up...Christmas Eve around 3 am... so late. But in time... none the less.

I used to fly fish a lot but that has been curtailed the last few years due to hurrricane damage to my favorite high elevation mountain streams. I’m afraid hurricane Helene may have finished that for me since many streams are now filled with fallen trees and mud from landslides. I also am a contributing editor to Model Railroader magazine and have been writing about model trains since about 1990. I write articles, product reviews, and an occasional book. In addition to writing about trains I also have a YouTube channel with videos on all aspects of model railroading. Finally I practice my banjo picking about 1-2 hours each day, until my wife puts an end to that.
