Hi All,

I posted this year ago on a different forum as i have some more time now to try out a few things.

I was thinking of getting a trunk chopped niwaki and turning it into a hybrid large bonsai / niwaki in a pot, this is one example but the nursery had a few.

It is possible to take a tree like in the photos the trunk it about the 2 thickness of 2 x coke cans.

i.e pot it on an angle choose 1 branch to be the first branch and wire another upwards and make the trunk chop a angle to suit and carry on building. It obviously lacks some taper etc but might be a fun long term project.

Anyone got any youtube video or big pines like this or blogs or advice?

It’s possible but this isn’t all that large. It’s smaller than a lot of bonsai out there but rink chopping is an aid in developing conifer bonsai. It’s not the greatest way to begin large bonsai because trunk chops require aggressive regrowth to match the new top with the old bottom. Black pine bonsai are developed this way but in the ground not Ina container which slows growth down

when i say large its prob large for where i am as material is few and far between. i.e its above 1 meter
Bonsai stock is better measured by trunk caliper or diameter. Height for trees large and small is pretty variable. By trunk diameter this is medium sized

Do a search on black pine nursery stock and bonsai. There are guides out there to take you through the process of reduction and development
