Hi all,

I repotted my nursery black pine. It was in a nursery pot and extremely root bound, so I wanted to repot it. I repotted it into a wood box to let it grow stronger. 5 days after the repot it yellowed a bunch. I’ll post photos of before and after bellow. I took off maybe 40-60 percent of the soil but only trimmed 1/3 of roots from the bottom. I used a 1/3 mix of akadama, pumis and lava rock. Looking for recommendations on what to do or do you think it’s dead at this point? I am pulling it out of the garage for morning and afternoon sun and I put it in the garage for mid day strong sun. Also I will be watering light.

Where are you located?
Hard to tell but it kind of looks like its needles are dessicated/drying out so either the roots are compromised and not soaking up enough water for the evaporation the foliage is getting or you arent watering enough or a combination of both.

It also looks like you repotted after the buds opened and started to grow?

I’m located in Martha’s Vineyard, maybe I repotted too late then?

Is there anything I really can do or to late now and just have to baby it and see what happens

I don’t think you repotted too early. I see buds that were most likely set last year so I don’t think this one has started growing yet. With that being said, I can’t tell you why it’s experienced the abrupt color change. I’d get it in full sun and be very careful with watering until it shows signs of growth.

Got it will do, it’s been in a shed all winter so I’m easing it out to full sun I nervous about scorching it

I guess it’s possible the yellowing is sun burn. I’ve kept jbp in a garage or cold room for 4 months during the winter and put them right out on the benches with 8+ hours of direct sun and never experienced sunburn before. You could plan on keeping it in 4 to 6 hours of morning sun only and gradually increase to full sun over a 2 to 3 week. If the tree is otherwise ok, those buds should start to swell in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

Awesome good to know, I don’t think it’s from sun burn yesterday was the first day of being out in the sun and was only out for 5 plus hours of morning or afternoon sun

How often did you water it while it was in there?
I’ve only watered it once so far, it was still wet after 5 days but I’m about to do a second water today or tomorrow when it needs it with super thrive

I believe Paradox was asking about the frequency of watering while overwintering in the shed. If the tree dried out during the winter, that could explain the needle color.

I checked pretty often by weekly or weekly and watered when ever i felt it dry I really never let it go dry to be honest cit always had color until the repot

That appears to be an Austrian black pine, you should be able to keep it outside all winter in your area. Also did you bare root it when repotting of simply stick it in a pot with your bonsai soil mix?

I didn’t bare root it but I did remove some soil and roots. I took probably 50 percent soil out and cut 20-25 percent roots off of the bottoms. It was in a 3g nursery pot. I don’t think it’s an Austrian black pine I have it written down on the old nursery pot
