I've been looking at native maple trees in Ohio. We have several, and I've read what I can find here regarding most of them.. but I don't see any posts about Black Maple specifically.

It's actually probable that I could find them here in places I could take them, but why take them if they don't meet the fundamental requirements of creating bonsai.. From the little I could find, it sounds like (despite long petioles and large leaves) they would work, and even accomplish some leaf reduction.

Any resources or information, experience, would be great. Thanks.

Strictly anecdotal, but: black maple is very closely related to sugar maple (called a subspecies by some). I saw a small sugar maple in Chase Rosade’s garden that had leaves so far reduced they were close in size to a Japanese maple. But he’s been at this a long time, your mileage may vary.
