Pff. Easy.Ok, I'll call your bluff. Here ya go... a Japanese maple cultivar I bought two days ago. As you can see, it still has its nursery tag. I'll even give you TEN guesses. Let us know what cultivar it is.

That is absurd. It is unlikely that even Vertrees could have had a success rate that high.Guessing cultivars has a 90%+ success rate.
That is a given. Not too sure even nurseries are 100% accurate.....

There are maybe a thousand cultivars and it is quite possible that one has been registered since this post started.
-Wa totemoWhy don't you post all ten guesses and then I'll post a photo of the nursery tag (your first guess was wrong).
Im curious as to what it is labeled. beni kawa? Why don't you post all ten guesses and then I'll post a photo of the nursery tag (your first guess was wrong).
LMAO!! Has anyone ever tried to die on a hill that was so small (and fragile)?I have the J.D. Vertrees book, "Japanese Maples" second edition. The text you cite above does not appear anywhere in it. The back flap of my second edition book says Mr. Vertrees passed away in 1993. So, either you're quoting some article somewhere written by someone else about Mr. Vertrees' book or perhaps you're quoting a foreward added posthumously to a later edition of the book, again written by someone else (someone who was being imprecise in their use of language). The book is concerned with taxonomy and nomenclature. It does not suggest that you can look at a tree and decide, "Oh, this tree here is an Acer palmatum 'Nana segawa' because I think it looks like one."
DAMN! He's going for it!!-Wa totemo

I don't Need to do anything but enjoy my Japanese Maples. If 50 cultivars and a couple hundred seedlings is what makes me happy, so be it. I certainly will never find a need to manage 1,000 cultivars to the exclusion of all my other interests. I Know I cannot manage 1,000 cultivars and if you can, I suppose I should either bow down to you or ignore you.I suspect you need cultivate your base of cultivar knowledge.
1,000 is a very manageable number.

Its Greek to me.I have very specific ideas about what should, and should not, make you happy.
Rarely are we presented with such simple and obvious choices!
