So, first off thanks to the man who gave this one to me- John g- he said basically that he just wasn't feeling it, and asked if I wanted it along with some Austrian Black pines and Swamp Maples (just your local variety red Maple, Acer Rubrum is I guess what you would call them)... Plus a few other things... Insanely kind of him! I have been so fortunate to meet the people close to me who are into Bonsai and to find them all to be incredible people who love propagating trees as much as I do!
This particular MONSTER Elm was collected on one of his trips to the swamp a couple years back, and rode home- about 45 minutes- in the back of my pick up! It was a hot day, and these guys don't like to be dry, so it got a few crispy leaves on top from the wind- pic one is a wide angle shot and just for scale, that pot it sits in is about 24 inches across! The third pic shows the profusion of new growth that is popping all over this tree after it's little minor stress of riding home in the back of my truck and getting a 45 minute heat and wind storm... It obviously wasn't too hurt as this was only about two weeks ago! You cannot really see it from these pics, but there is a little stump of dead wood from the chop at collection I plan to carve out and make a Uro of some sort eventually. Other than that, over the dormant season I am going to thin out the branches, wire and prune the ones I keep and repot this sucker next Spring most likely... Just showing it off I guess! I own a bunch of Elms but this is my First Water Elm. The growth is a little more zig zag than most the varieties I own now, But the leaves are nice and small and I think the growth pattern will produce nice movement! REALLY EXCITED about this one, and so so grateful to John, and to ken who introduced me to John a few years ago and rode out there with me to see him. More than showing this tree off or bragging about it, I just wanted to post this as a thanks to the guys who have helped me out so much in recent years!
