Quick question to the consortium.
I am in the process of building a area in the yard exclusive to my bonsai (pre).
I have the sun rising over the front of the house, which gives me full sun in the backyard about 9am and sets in the rear of the yard about 8pm.
Am I better to orientate the benches north/south so everyone gets the benefits of the sun all day. (Some may be shaded AM or PM because of multiple shelf levels.) Or east/west so no one is shaded other than by their neighbor?

Typical orientation is to run the bench north-south. No one gets shaded out by it’s neighbor.

Sounds like you won’t be growing any Japanese maples haha. I also have full sun all day. I love it but I’m just doing pine and bald cypress

I run mine southeast to northeast but it’s a site thing more than a choice. Obviously north to south is ideal

I have several JM's that are in partial shade. Looking at getting a few more.

North / South and remember to rotate trees for even distribution. Shade cloth for maples etc. Unless Tridents, they like sun more than most.

@Leo in N E Illinois , I already have formed a habit of rotating my trees as I have a few "sun seekers" like Dawn Cypress.
I can see where with the larger ones, it would be easier to use turntables to facilitate their rotation.
Thanks for the advice!!

@River's Edge . Sorry I was responded to @Leo in N E Illinois as your post loaded. My JM's have a separate partially shaded area all their own!!!
No Tridents!! (YET!!🤫)
