April 2024 I acquired a beautiful mature Sawara Cypress of 80 cm (31.5 inch) high, aging about 70+ years old, according to the former owner, 10 years of which it was taken care of by that keeper.
The pot bound cypress definitely needed repotting after growing 6+ years in its beautiful 35 cm by 8 cm round pot.
The pot however appeared to be hollow on the inside by 2cm (2/3rd of an inch), making it impossible for me to get through it with my roothook & handsaw. After +1 hour of scraping and sawing, I prudently used my rubber hammer to force it out, but to no avail. The pot eventually broke.
This gave me the opportunity to give it a bit more breathing room. So I moved the tree into a wider lotus shaped pot.
Unhappy at first with the loss of my beautiful drum pot, the tree seems to looks just great into its new bowl.
Now I'm letting the tree recover and gain strength.
