Apricot "Ume"

Bud grafting/chip budding can be very useful

It's commonly used in Japan for for entirely swapping the cultivar of mature Ume bonsai (for changing the flower type, foliage type, or other characteristics and habits), and this works well because it can be more discrete than using scions. I personally find bud grafts easier to use when working on smaller material, or in tight spots.

The success rate can be quite high. I did two all the way back onto the trunk of an old Ume (to start a new primary branch in a new location), no problem.
Very interesting. Thanks.

Very informative video. Love the first part most with those older trees and their owner.

I love that too. If only I were a loaded Japanese restauranteur.

I’m sort of trying to train one like that one he likes the most as vague inspiration, I think most kinds just don’t like to grow like that. But hey it’s something to take a whack at.

Managed not to have fungal issues this spring and backed off the spraying this summer…

I think that Shidare Ume was also what catapulted my interest in them as well, probably doesn't help that his displays are a stunning reflection of his unparalleled passion for the species. Sadly I have yet to find a weeping Mume for sale, even as nursery stock.

I’m have 4 weeping varieties in my propagation cycle. They all root surprisingly well! Send me an email if you’re interested.

I’ll say that in my opinion and based on what i saw in Japan, you’d want to grow atleast a trunkline using a vigorous variety (or yabai), and then graft the cultivar you want for the finished product

Careful! You cod end up with a whole company because of him, like i did! 😅
