This red maple can have large leaves but they seem to reduce easily to near microscopic sizes, along with the internodes and petioles. As a plus it roots easily from cuttings and has interesting new growth that turns from bright salmon to white to varigated white/green. Fall colors are red.

I have some nursery stock that I air layered this year, as well as some rooted softwood cuttings. Seems like a fun cultivar to play with.

Here's a photo from today. The pinkish leaves are relatively young, but the tiny varigated leaves are hardened off. No fertilization for those, moderate for the younger leaves.

Here's another tree under heavy fertilization. Largest leaves about about 2" acorss.

Anyone else have experience with this one?

Its a really pretty thing. Be careful how you deal with it if you are propagating it. It may have a plant patent.
I would love to have one in my yard but as a rule I don't care for variegated bonsai.

Yeah, i'm not normally into varigated leaves either, but this one leafs out solid salmon and white, and seems to flush continuously. So lots of solid color.

I checked with goggle earlier and it doesn't seem to be patented. Though I admit I'm not sure how to definitively find out.

If that plant doesn't have a pp, that's great.
Propagate to your hearts content.

If you are willing to sell a couple I would like to try them out for some mame projects.

I found 6 different nurseries that sell them...............all out of stock.

Jim Doyle has one of these, I'm not certain if it's future sale material or if it's his personal project tree. He hasn't done anything to it yet but the leaves are pretty consistently 2" across the tree, despite being grown in mostly shade. No helpful information for you in there haha, but this is only the second time I've seen the cultivar, so I assume it's on the rare side

No experience myself yet, but it's been on my list for a while! What a beautiful tree! I have heard these can handle full sin!

Not necessarily. This is common but not across the board. This may produce a very strong plant from cuttings and I suspect that being Acer rubrum, that it will. You can't know until you try.
Yeah, that's what surprising about this cultivar. It seems to be very healthy on its own roots. In fact the nursery trees I purchased don't seem to be grafted.

Here's a tiny air layer I separated this summer after only 26 days:

Yup. This is for sure my next favorite cultivar! With the added bonus that I can ground grow without any fears! JM's are really marginal here at the boarder of Zone 4. I have ground grown JMs, but it's like a dice roll. Last year had 6 days less than -20! Luckily all trees were sheltered in garage.

I only have first year cuttings and air layers right now. Hit me up again next year and I'll hopefully have something to share. @Pitoon too.

I don't mind them being small, actually I prefer them that way. If you want to sell or trade let me know. I still have some dwarf chrysanthemums if you are interested, and they have flower buds so you can enjoy the flowers this season.

I'd love to but I don't think I can ship these until next year. They are just rooted and in loose soil. I don't think they'd survive the journey.

I'm tracking. Keep me in mind when they become established. If the leaves reduce as small as you say they will work pretty well for mame.
