Starting a (long term) thread for this American persimmon. I picked it up for 40 dollars at an end of the year sale, and figured why not. I have another mature landscape persimmon and two small ones.

Plan is to let it bulk up until further notice, but this thread will help me track changes.

It’s currently about 9 feet high, so I’m only taking a photo of the lower trunk since I will be chopping it in a few years.

I've been eating the fruit and collecting seeds, and I've got my fingers crossed that they germinate this coming spring. I'm looking forward to watching how yours responds to bonsai techniques, so I can figure out how to approach the species.

Have you air layered ?? I wonder how well they do .. there’s this old cat nearby who has very mature gnarly American persimmons all over his farm and I’ve talked to him about possibly striking an air layer.

@Gabler I started doing the same with the single persimmon in my area, but realized quickly that it’s an American persimmon base with a graft that’s producing no seeds. Great flavor, and the tree is covered already in orange fruit, but no luck on germination.

@Shogun610 I have not, but it would be interesting to try. I wonder how the alligator skin bark would work depending on the method. I’d try it if I could

The two things I’ve seen on here is that they family fairly well (I think it was a post from years ago by @Leo in N E Illinois ), and that pruning in fall seems the best. I’m not sure if this is something along the lines of how Selweetgum will drop a branch if the dormant terminal bud is removed
